Miami Travel Guide: Where to Stay, Eat, and What to Do

Miami is one of those places where the type of trip you have depends on how you plan it. You can go for just a relaxing beach trip, a girls trip, an art and food trip, a nightlife trip or a mix of all these. I’ve been to Miami as a solo traveler, with a friend group, and with family. The city works well for all of those occasions, but the experience can look very different depending on where you stay, what you plan, and how much you want to spend. Miami can be expensive, it’s not the most walkable city, and it helps to plan ahead, but if you do it right, it’s a fun city for a long weekend or a quick getaway, especially from the east coast.

Where to Stay in Miami

Where you stay in Miami can shape your entire trip because the city is very spread out and not very walkable between neighborhoods.

South Beach is the best area for first-time visitors because you can walk to the beach, restaurants, cafés, and nightlife. If you plan to spend most of your time at the beach, this is the easiest place to stay. I also recommend staying at a hotel that has both a pool and beach service with chairs and umbrellas. It makes your beach days much more comfortable and you don’t have to worry about finding chairs to rent every day. In this case, I have stayed at The Goodtime Hotel, which I’ve fully reviewed here.

Mid-Beach is a little quieter and more relaxed, but still on the beach with nice hotels and pools. This is a good option if you want a beach trip that isn’t necessarily about nightlife or proximity to the most lively part of the strip. If this is your area of choice, then I would recommend the Alexander Hotel.

Things to Do in Miami

One of my favorite things to do in Miami is visit the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). The museum focuses on modern and contemporary art, and the building itself is beautiful. Even if you don’t spend hours inside, the outdoor hanging gardens and the waterfront views are nice to spend a day outside.

Of course, you also have to spend time at the beach. The lifeguard towers in Miami Beach are iconic and all designed differently, and walking along the beach path is one of the easiest ways to spend a morning or afternoon. You can relax on the beach or walk along Ocean Drive.

Wynwood is another area you can visit, especially if you like art, photography, and murals. You can walk around the neighborhood and see street art everywhere, and there are also restaurants, cafés, and breweries in the area.

The Design District is a good place to walk around if you’re interested in fashion, architecture, and luxury shopping. Even if you don’t plan to buy anything, the buildings and public art installations are interesting to see.

If you’re going with a group, one of the most fun things to do in Miami is rent a boat for a few hours. This is a very popular Miami activity, and it’s a great way to see the city from the water, listen to music, and just spend time with friends. This is definitely more fun with a group, but there are also boat tours you can take as a solo traveler.

Where to Eat in Miami

Miami has a huge food scene, and part of the Miami experience is going out to eat. Almost every restaurant requires a reservation, and I recommend always making one. Generally, you can only making reservations within two or three weeks of the date you plan to go, so it’s a good idea to check restaurant websites or sites like Resy and OpenTable periodically to make sure you get first dibs when reservations become available.

For a more quaint, cute, or date-night vibe, I recommend places like Tam Tam or Yardbird. These are places where you can sit, have a good meal, and actually talk and enjoy the atmosphere.

If you want more of an upscale, dress-up, see-and-be-seen type of dinner, places like Carbone are very popular. A restaurant like this is much about the atmosphere as it is about the food, and Miami definitely has a “going out” culture at night.

For more casual daytime food, Miami has a lot of cafés and quick spots where you can grab breakfast or lunch. For delicious pizza, I would recommend Mister O1.

Getting Around Miami

One thing to know about Miami is that it is not a very walkable city unless you are staying in South Beach and plan to stay in that area most of the time. The neighborhoods are spread out, so you will likely need to use Uber or Lyft to get around. You can rent a car, but traffic can be heavy and parking can be expensive, especially in South Beach.

You can walk within neighborhoods like South Beach, Wynwood, and Brickell, but getting between those areas usually requires a car or Uber.

Best Time to Visit Miami

The best time to visit Miami is between November and April when the weather is warm but not super hot and humid. This is also peak season, so prices can be higher. With that said, I’ve been in both May and September in shoulder seasons and enjoyed nice weather and cheaper hotel rates.

Spring Break in March is a very popular time to visit, especially in South Beach, so it will be more crowded and more expensive, but also very lively.

Art Basel in early December is another big time in Miami, especially if you’re interested in art, fashion, and events, but hotels and restaurants will be more expensive during that time.

Miami Travel Tips and Hacks

Miami can be expensive, but there are a few things you can do to make your trip easier and more affordable:

  • Staying at a hotel with a pool and beach access can actually save you money because you won’t have to rent beach chairs and umbrellas every day.

  • Making restaurant reservations in advance is also a good idea, especially for popular places.

  • Happy hour is big in Miami and is a good way to try nice restaurants without paying full dinner prices.

  • Brunch is also very popular and can sometimes be a more affordable way to experience restaurants that are expensive at night.

  • If you’re traveling with friends, splitting Ubers and doing group activities like a boat day makes things much more affordable per person.

  • Bring outfits—Miami is a city where people dress up, especially at night, and a lot of the restaurants and lounges have a dress code or at least a certain vibe.

Miami as a Solo Trip vs a Girls Trip

I’ve done Miami as a solo trip and with a group, and both were fun in different ways. Solo, Miami is great for lazy beach days, cafés, museums, and shopping. With a group, Miami is definitely a good place for a social trip—brunch, dinners, boat days, going out at night, dressing up and taking pictures.

If you’re planning a girls trip, I would definitely recommend doing a boat day, making a few dinner reservations, and planning at least one nice brunch.
